Essential Tips for Lawn Mowing Safety
Lawn mowers are not only common lawn care tools, but also common sources of injury. Lawn mower injuries can include cuts, amputation, broken and dislocated bones, eye injuries, and burns. Simple things like wet grass, yard debris, loose clothes, and slippery shoes can heighten the risk of injury. To decrease risk of mowing-related injuries, follow these tips:
- Before mowing, pick up stones, toys, and other debris from your yard.
- Wear sturdy shoes with non-slip soles, long pants, and protective eyewear while mowing.
- Never attempt to lift, adjust, or repair a walk-behind mower while its engine is still running.
- Never mow a wet lawn or mow late in the day when light is dim.
- Make sure children and other people are indoors or at a safe distance away while mowing.
- Start and refuel mowers outdoors, not in a garage or shed.
- Turn off the mower and wait for blades to stop before removing the grass catcher, unclogging the chute, or crossing driveways, sidewalks, or other hard surfaces.
- Do not allow children to ride on driven mowers.
- Wear heavy gloves when changing or cleaning blades.
- When using a walk-behind mower, mow across slopes instead of up and down. Avoid mowing on any steep slopes.
