How to Protect Your Northern Virginia or Maryland Garden from Pesky Rabbits

Rabbits may be cute visitors to your Reston, Bethesda, or Great Falls yard, but they may also be pests who wreak havoc on your garden. Rabbits like to snack on virtually every garden plant, including flowers, vegetables, grasses, and even woody plants. If you have noticed pellet-sized droppings, nibbled leaves, or stripped bark, it’s likely that rabbits have visited your garden.

To deter rabbits from visiting your garden, try the following ideas:

• Change the rabbits’ habitat in your garden. Remove any brush or weed piles, or other debris where rabbits can live and hide.
• Surround your garden with wire mesh. The mesh fence should be at least two fee high aboveground and more than one foot deep underground.
• Surround individual plants with mesh cylinders.
• Spray nontoxic repellants on all plants and reapply regularly and after rainfall.
• Move bird feeders away from gardens, as rabbits can be attracted by and feed on fallen birdseed.
