Spring Landscaping Tips For Your Northern Virginia Home

Get a jump on summer landscaping fun with these spring landscaping tips and begin your Northern Virginia summer on the right foot and ready to enjoy the beauty of nature around your home.

• Remove all leaves from perennial beds and cut back any stems or seedpods that remain after the winter months. Most ornamental grasses, Russian Sage and Butterfly Bush are perennials that should be cut back to within two to eight inches from the soil.
• Leave the pruning of the spring flowering shrubs such as lilac, quince, azalea and mock orange for after they have finished blooming in the Northern Virginia spring or early summer.
• Improve air circulation in your grandiflora, hybrid tea and miniature roses by removing all dead or broken stemas, and trim shrub roses back by one-third.
• Grab the shovel and pile on the mulch in your tree rings and flower beds to the maximum height of four inches. Mulch not only helps weed control, but also prevents soil erosion and adds an elegant touch to your Washington DC area landscape.
• Trim trees and bushes to promote healthy growth in a uniform manner. Remove dead or dying limbs and branches, tree sprouts growing near the base of the tree and remove fallen branches.
